SATERN - Current Status

The development of the Southern Baptist Emergency Amateur Radio Service (SouthBEARS) is a result of a cooperative effort of Southern Baptist Amateur radio operators.
The mission of SouthBEARS is to provide a network of support communication services to Southern Baptist volunteer groups and affiliated agencies during commercial communication disruptions; and to handle health and welfare messages in and out of disaster areas whenever time and priorities allow. This is accomplished using the resources and talents of Christian amateur radio operators. Since disaster relief is a fluid situation, we also strive to stay fluid, and attempt to meet the needs of every disaster victim through the medium of communication. We do these things for the glory of Christ's Kingdom.
Regardless of the situation or circumstance, we strive to exhibit an attitude that is as Christ-like as humanly possible to every contact, be it peer or disaster victim. We will consistently strive to labor for Jesus under the Bible verse, "..whatsoever you did for the least of these brothers of mine, you did it for me."  Matthew 25:40 NIV
In times past, the Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN) have encouraged SouthBEARS to check into their nets whenever possible and when doing so, to identify ourselves as SouthBEARS members. This provides us with yet another resource, with which to accomplish our mission and goals, by utilizing existing nets managed by fellow believers.

UPDATED 7/20/2021
SouthBEARS and The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network (SATERN), have worked closely together for years.  SBDR has a long-standing Memorandum of Understanding with the Salvation Army, covering many aspects of disaster relief.  We have utilized SATERN's existing amateur radio network to fulfill our mission of supporting SBDR units in the field, and the Communications Manual contains a lot of SATERN material.
In recent weeks there have been some changes in the organization. Here is our current understanding of where things stand:

International SATERN SSB Net:  12:00 AM Eastern time on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 14.325 USB.  This is in cooperation with the Hurricane Watch Net.  We checked in from NW Arkansas and heard a number of stations from Colorado to Florida, including a very strong control station in Jackson, MS.

The International SATERN Digital Net:  Formerly operated on Saturdays at 13:00 Eastern on 14.065 MHz.  TSA is working to re-establish.  No dates, times, or frequency have been established yet.

Southern Territory SATERN SSB Net:  Formerly operated on Saturdays at 10:00 Central on 7.265 MHz.  TSA is working to re-establish.  No dates, times, or frequency have been established yet.

More information on SATERN is temporarily located on The Salvation Army's Emergency Disaster Services website at https://disaster.salvationarmyusa.org  The former domain, satern.org,  is offline and may not return.

A group called the AR Message Net currently holds an HF voice net on 14.265 MHz USB (the former SATERN frequency) at 11:00 AM Eastern time, Monday through Friday.  Although many of the same operators are thought to be involved, this net is not affiliated with the Salvation Army.  As before, anyone is welcome to participate in their net.  Many established, reputable nets such as this one may be a viable way to pass traffic in the event of an emergency.  Please be aware, however, that this particular net is no longer run by TSA, and SBDR does not have an MOU with the new operators.

A digital net is still reported to be operating on Saturdays at 13:00 Eastern on 14.065.  Again, this net is no longer associated with TSA, and the same cautions apply.

We are in e-mail contact with the Southern Territory SATERN Coordinator, and will continue to update as new information becomes available.
